Hey guys. I am proud to announce that i took a very last minute Job with a company called Lake Films… Lets make a long story short..In a way…I just wrapped on a film and my dog is running out in the woods somewhere so eventually I’m going to have to go find her…. I was suppose to audition for a film called “A Dance with Andrea” about 3 months ago maybe a little longer. It turned out that i could not make the audition due to other obligations that i had to take care of. I spoke to the director/Producer and that was that. A few months later I receive an email from that same Director (Lance) It turns out he was still in need of someone to play Victor which was the part i was going to audition for. Now mind you i was just saying to a few friends that this will be the first time in 5 years i did not have anything to put into The Garden State Film Festival… He sent the script over and after reading the script i emailed him at about 2AM and said “Lets Do It” i fell in love with the story. Today, Wednesday December 14 we just wrapped all my scenes. It was amazing. Its just funny how things work out. If something is meant to be it will be you just have to take advantage of it and go with it. I’m really looking forward to everyone seeing this one and I’m hoping it can be the Garden State Film Festival that it premiers in. The film is called a Dance with Andrea and will be out soon. Below is a small teaser. Talk soon.. J. Sernio

Once again thank you for all of the support that is given to myself as well as Independent film. I hope that you all keep following.

New Jersey Actor “Joe Sernio” is Awarded the “2011 Robert Pastorelli Rising Star Award”
By Evelyn Bonilla

In my opinion a depiction of life would be, “when you’re on a lonely road; you are given two options; you can either get off the road or continue going until you get somewhere.” In truth it’s this option to continue down the road; that has led New Jersey actor Joe Sernio down the road to success.

Robert Pastorelli

On Sunday, April 3rd at the Garden State Film Festival Awards Dinner at The English Manor in Ocean Township, NJ; Sernio will be presented with the “2011 Robert Pastorelli Rising Star Award”. This prestigious award is named after the late award-winning actor and co-founder of the GSFF-Garden State Film Festival Robert Pastorelli. Pastorelli a New Jersey actor known for his work on television and film; was instrumental in bringing this prestigious event to the State of New Jersey. Recipients for this award are painstakingly chosen for talent in acting, determination and quality of character.

In the entertainment industry for the past 10 years, Sernio has perfected his craft and has excelled it to its fullest potential. He’s acted on television and film in a variety of roles, performed in live theater and has been featured numerous times in print work and media. His work has been noticed by the press and he has had a variety of articles published about him.

To date, Sernio is what most in the entertainment industry would consider a “natural born actor”, because of his ability to bring to the screen his special craft mixed with” passion and determination.” His role in director, “Nick Pavano’s” Lighting Film entitled, “The Roadhouse” (theroadhousemovie.com) in which he plays “Joe Nuzzo” alongside the very talented Monica Knight, is “haunting yet compelling”. Premiered in 2009, at the Garden State Film Festival, it rose to high acclaimed by winning the prestigious “2009 Audience Award.”

Joe Sernio

As he moves forward in his career, Sernio is once again in the limelight with a lead role in an award-winning film directed by Frank M. Calo, entitled, “Mourning on Charlotte Street” (mourningoncharlottestreet.com) in this film, Sernio plays the role of Lorenzo. The story takes place in the 1950’s, Bronx, N.Y and is based on a tragic true story of two brothers and their unbreakable bond of brotherly love. This film has received wide acclaimed having gathered a variety of awards at the 2010 Garden State Film Festival for Best Drama, Best Thriller, Best Director a Viewer’s Choice Award and a nomination for Sernio as Best Actor for his portrayal of Lorenzo.

Now as Sernio prepares to accept this award, he expresses his feeling upon being notified he is the winner of this award, “It is truly an honor to have an award like this and to especially have something in the form of an award given to me with the Pastorelli name on it. I promise to take this award in all future adventures I choose and to help keep the Pastorelli name strong. Thank you to all of my friends, family, directors, and fellow actors and actresses that help us all do what we love to do. A special thanks to “The Pastorelli Family and The Garden State Film Festival for this amazing gift.”

Presently, Sernio is working on live script readings in New York City’s elaborate theatre district and most recently a live stage production opposite film and television actor, Vinny Pastore. Acquiring roles in television, film and theater it would seem that there is nothing that this talented actor can’t do. If I were to make a suggestion it would probably be, “Hollywood take notice, Joe Sernio is an actor you don’t want to miss!” To learn more about New Jersey actor Joe Sernio sign on to his website at joesernioonline.com

“You do a show and go home and don’t realize the impact you’re having. Then one day you’re returning Christmas presents at a mall in New Jersey and you hear people behind you talking. You think, ‘Oh, yeah. I do that TV thing. Yeah.’ ” ~ Robert Pastorelli

WOW .. When i received the call to let me know i was being considered it was an honor just to hear that. Then hearing that i won the award i had tears in my eyes… I can not thank everyone enough for all of your support through the years. Not many people know what it takes to do what actors do or go through what actors go through. Its not the hardest job in the world but it is definitely not the easiest by any means but having support from family and friends make it all worth doing it.

A few years back before i even knew of this award i use to study Robert Pastorelli in some of my classes. He had the most natural form of acting i have ever seen. He draws you in the second you start watching. He did a show called Cracker – Mind Over Murder, from the opening scene through the series he gives some of the most amazing monologues i have ever watched. I’m sure most people know him for his work on Murphy brown as the painter, but he is much much more than just the painter. His credits are all very strong. Actors are lucky if they get there 1 or 2 jobs a year. Pastorelli was working 3 or more jobs a year. Striking Distance, Dances with Wolves, Be Cool, Michael, and that’s just to name a few. If your getting into acting or already into acting you have to watch some of his work. True Talent describes it the best.

It is truly an honor to have an award like this and to especially have something in the form of an award given to me with the Pastorelli name on it. I promise to take this award in all future adventures i choose and to help keep the Pastorelli name strong. Thank you to all of my friends, Family, directors, and fellow actors and actresses that help us all do what we love to do. A special thanks to The Pastorelli Family and The Garden State Film Festival for this amazing gift.

Im going to add two films below i think you all should watch. One is a series the other is a movie for TV from a few years back. Watch the acting and study it. If you watch Cracker, Watch the entire series.

Cracker – Mind Over Murder
Gerry “Fitz” Fitzgerald (Pastorelli) is a troubled doctor of psychology. To be able to pay the bills, he gives lectures at colleges, has a small practice in a mini-mall, has his own radio show, and helps the Los Angeles police department solve difficult cases. But that’s only true when he doesn’t have to deal with his own inner demons, which include drinking, gambling, extramarital affairs, and a tense relationship with his wife Judith and son Michael.

The yarn Princess
Margaret is slightly retarded, and when her husband, Jake, is diagnosed with schizophrenia, the authorities wish to take her children away from her. She has to prove in a court of law that she is capable of taking care of her family.

treetwise mobster-turned-movie producer Chili Palmer is back, but this time Chili has abandoned the fickle movie industry and veered into the music business, tangling with Russian mobsters and gangsta rappers and taking a talented, feisty young singer named Linda Moon under his wing. From the recording studio to an Aerosmith concert to the MTV Music Awards, he manipulates events to watch them play out the Chili way, using his signature blend of wiseguy skills and negotiation tactics.

Thank you again for everyone support on this amazing journey. J Sernio

Totally Totally kidding on this one. I figured with a catchy title more people might check it out. Ha. When i first started acting, by started i mean after all the training, i was so unsure of what to do or how to go about getting my work or at that time my very empty resume out to any casting director or agent in the bizz. I was given advice by so many people it was all different advice. It was never the right way to do something it was just the way they did it. So if it worked for them doesn’t really mean it would work for me at the time.

I wasn’t sure of what to do as far as go for an agent first, Go right to the casting directors, etc.. So i sat down and did some research. Research meaning sitting in a book store and reading all of the books so i didn’t have to purchase them. (Great Tip for Starving Actors). One thing i did notice was that agents obviously base a lot on past work just to get you a meeting with there agency. Yes i learned a lot in classes but never had any real experience and i knew the only experience i was going to get was to get my ass out there and audition. So i said ill wait to send to agents and try to build up some work on my resume along with a reel that way the agents were able to gain some interest before i event got to there office if it even got that far.

For a while i used some background agencies to build up some work. One of my favorite was Background Inc. (Great People) They called all the time. After a while they started sending me out on some Principle Auditions. They were actually the ones that i booked “Haunting Evidence” through. Amazing leading role and was a hit series on CourtTV/TruTV.

So once i had my head shots, Post Cards, and Resume ready to go i started submitting. Here is what i did for a while which might help you out.

First Month
I sent out a cover letter, Resume, and a Head shot. I targeted the shows and casting agencies that i wanted to go for. I tried to mail everyone i was targeting right in the first month that way in the next few months all i had to do was send follow ups.
(I kept a hand written paper with the date i sent the packet out, The Person, and what i sent out)

Second Month – Fifth Month
I sent a Follow up Post Card just letting them know of any new projects i did or had going on.

I did that up to about the 5th month. After that i went right back to the beginning. Cover Letter, Head shot, and Resume. I would even put a reel in there if i had one. Then the months after that i followed the same pattern with a follow up post card. At times i would even put a cover letter with the post card. (Not necessary but hey…)

Do they get annoyed? No. Remember there are hundreds of head shots coming through there door a day. Keep your face fresh and your name a name that they will remember.

Years back i did a few months of work on As The World Turns. A few months ago a close friend/Actor had an audition which he landed shortly after. He had been telling the casting directors of some new work he had done including a film we did together. The casting director paused and said i heard of that. He mentioned that i worked on the show before and i was working with him on the new project. She knew exactly who i was and what the film was. Why? I sent follow ups every month along with post cards of the film just to keep in touch. You want them to remember you. You want to be annoying. If you owned a company and someone wanted a job and they were consistent with reaching out to you and keeping you updated wouldn’t you put them on your watch list?

Have to run. Ill be back soon. Thank you all again for your support.

So … Mourning on Charlotte Street fans. As you all know the film is based on a true story which takes place in 1954. Nicky, a high school honor student, dreams of college and a future with his loving girlfriend, Jenny Corbin. Lorenzo, a charismatic high school drop-out, spends his days in pool halls mixing with the local hoodlums. Separated by darkness and corruption, united by the unbreakable bond of brotherly love… So from what i hear you get to relive the tough streets of the Bronx in the 1950’s in this powerful tale that became front page news and captured the heart of a city live on stage…

Meeting next week in Asbury Park with a few people to discuss bringing this to the stage for a live performance with most of the actors from the film. The film went on to win Best Picture (Viewers Choice), Best Drama, and Best Suspense Thriller. It was an amazing feeling to do this. One being that i was playing an actual person that lived through this and two being it was an amazing script.

By the end of the film shoot we were one big family. Since then we have been traveling together to promote and raise funds at all different art gallery showings, Festivals, and more. So I’m excited to see what they want to do on stage with this. I think from the crowd we had at opening night in Asbury its probably the best place to start for us. That and Asbury is one of my favorite places to do anything with film. Pretty excited for this so i will keep you posted as soon as i get news. Speak soon.
